It is dated December, 1993.

I designed and made the quilt featured on the front of the magazine, called "WORK WITH LOVE." It is hand appliqued and machine pieced.

Overall Bill is admiring his Sunflowers. A large bandanna is dangling from his back pocket and he is wearing a large straw hat that shields his eyes from the sun. This is a 4 1/2" block with 8 hand appliqued pieces. To sew this block, start with your background fabric a little larger than you need. You'll trim this when the block is finished. Lightly crease the square from corner to corner, and down the middle each way to find the center. Baste the appliques to the background square one at a time as you sew them. Do all four sides and then the four corners. Because each piece had to be sewn perfectly, it took me a long time to sew. I found this block to be more difficult than most.

Dear Jane Quilt Block, C-1, "Trooper Green's Badge".

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 318px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MkV6a7eBvUg/TWd57HWLNbI/AAAAAAAACFU/Ve12hTw95E8/s320/C%2B1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577560720012948914" />Dear Jane Quilt Block, C-1, "Trooper Green's Badge".
4 1/2 inch block containing 13 hand sewn pieces. The scraps were cut in the shape of petals to be sewn in a daisy style quilt block. Looking through the scraps, I found only one with a cute white Scottie dog wearing a red bow, on a blue background. I just loved this print and thought about the Aunt Grace 1930's Reproduction fabrics designed by Judy Rothermel. I sent the scrap to Judy at the School House Quilt Shoppe, and she used it in her next Aunt Grace fabric line. When it was printed she sent me a yard of it as a thank you. Now I can sew little white Scottie dogs into all my scrap quilts, and enjoy the thought that this fabric print is now reproduced for a new generation to enjoy! (I see Judy still has some of the fabric left, and is selling it at $8.00 a yard. Look for the link to her shop in the sidebar at the right side of this page.)

Dear Jane Quilt Block, A-8, "Florence Nightingale"

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 311px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Fo6Ahl1L6Ck/TVYvFmdg1PI/AAAAAAAAB_0/9rDLcqGSf90/s320/A%2B-%2B8.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5572693362187752690" />Dear Jane Block, A-8, "Florence Nightingale", 4 1/2" block, 11 hand sewn pieces. Friends would sign their names or remembrance wishes on these blocks and give them as gifts, especially when someone was moving away. She made 6 of the blocks, and I sent her 6 blocks for her quilt. It's fun to do a block swap with friends. I drew the patterns for the Sun Bonnet Angel, the Red House, and the Pine Tree in the upper right corner. My blocks are hand pieced, machine pieced and hand appliqued. Mallory made the Christmas Tree, Wreath, Ginger Bread Man, Santa, Candle and Folk Art Angel, using Machine Paper Piecing, and Machine Applique. To organize a block exchange with friends, be sure to agree on the colors and types of fabrics to be used, so you'll have a pleasing finished quilt. I just love this Christmas quilt, and I'd like to thank Mallory for her blocks and her friendship! Hugs, Mallory! :)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lovingstitchesbycaroljean.blogspot.com/2011/02/christmas-sampler-mini-quilt-with-2-and.html' title='~A Christmas Sampler Mini Quilt With 2" Cut the pattern pieces from freezer paper and iron them to the wrong side of the fabric. Be sure to plan ahead of time where the grain lines should be. Trace around the freezer paper with a pencil to mark the sewing line. Avoid stretching the fabric. Mark the pieces carefully... they are VERY tiny. Leave the freezer paper on if possible while you sew the seams. It helps to stabilize the fabric. After sewing each seam, remove the paper from that piece. I found this block difficult to sew, and I was glad to finish it. Fabric by Thimbleberries. This block has some tricky angles. I re-drafted the pattern from the one in the Dear Jane book on gridded freezer paper. Then I cut out the pieces, and ironed them onto the reverse side of the fabric, leaving plenty of fabric around each piece to hold on to. Then I traced around each pattern piece with a pencil, and sewed on the pencil line. After sewing each seam, I trimmed the seam allowance to a bit less than 1/4 inch. The fabric I used doesn't have much pattern or color to it, but I think that helped to make the block turn out better than I expected. I like it!

Dear Jane Quilt Block, C - 9, "Jane's Tears".

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 318px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QVMqYiDup7g/TS_gK5nRRQI/AAAAAAAAB68/oEW7FKCUUk8/s320/C%2B-%2B9.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561910542694696194" />C - 9, "Jane's Tears", Fabric by Documentaries by Benartex. This was an easy block to sew, without too many pieces.

I just started a page at Facebook for my Dear Jane Quilt, "Dear Jane Quilt, And My Quilt "What A Pain Jane!"

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QVMqYiDup7g/TP-eZjghGyI/AAAAAAAAB0Y/58bxpCO8ZuI/s200/Dear%2BJane%2BCheater%2BCloth.%252C9%2B%2Bblocks.%2BRubics%2BCube.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5548327427809286946" /> I just started a page at Facebook for my Dear Jane Quilt, "Dear Jane Quilt, And My Quilt "What A Pain Jane!" I'll never be lucky enough to see the actual quilt in the Museum, but I can dream, can't I? I'm so eager to begin working on my Dear Jane quilt again. I just need to get through some of the Holiday Madness, and find myself a quiet evening. I have the pattern for the next quilt block cut out, and the fabric chosen. I just need to cut out the little pieces. Is anyone else out there working on Dear Jane? Let me know, OK? Yeaaaay!!! That's really what's been holding up my posting on this blog. My old computer still works well enough that I can get the floppys copied onto a newer storage device, and save them again. Whew! I didn't want to take all those photos again. So here's one of me 15 years ago teaching a class at Quilts By The Oz. It was a sampler quilt class, and I had brought some samples with me. Just before the class, I caught my finger in the store's back gate, and broke the end of it in the latch. OUCH! You can see my right first finger sticking up with a band-aid on it. That was the beginning of one thing after another that lead to my having to leave my Quilting career behind. A fateful day... I enjoyed teaching the class though and the students were great, but this was the last time I taught a class. But now, I'm looking forward to sharing my quilts with you, my blogging friends! Until then, Keep Piecing!! ~Carol Jean~ PS, I did not make the pillow behind me, but I did make the other quilts you see.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lovingstitchesbycaroljean.blogspot.com/2010/12/i-found-my-quilt-photos-great.html' title='I Found My Quilt Photos!!! I've had over 2 1/2 million views on my photos there, and as of this week, I'm number 45 on the Top 100 Most Interesting Members list posted at the bottom of the Home Page. :) BIG SMILES :) (Thank you Lord, that you've given me the ability to share the blessings you've bestowed upon me with the rest of the world through my photography, and in this way, we can make people smile!)

Two Dear Jane Quilt Blocks As Rubics Cubes.

These are the Dear Jane Quilt Blocks L-11, Caitlin's Rose, and H-10, Ben's Bowties made into Rubics Cubes by a photo editing program. The scraps of fabric I used had been cut for a postage stamp quilt and were left over. I placed the hearts on unbleached muslin, and decided to baste them to the muslin just by criss crossing the quilt in two directions. I appliqued the hearts down using a dark grey thread rather than black so it would look a bit faded. I used a button hole stitch to sew the hearts into place. I wasn't rigid about the placement of the hearts, because I wanted it to have a primitive quality. So some of the hearts lean this way or that which gives movement to the quilt. It's best not to over arrange pieces in a quilt like this so it looks more casual. Try to imagine how it would look if a child made it for her favorite doll. This is one of my favorite quilts, maybe because it allowed me to relax and have some fun. The finished quilt top was then placed over a piece of a sugar sack, that says C&H Sugar on the back. I quilted from one corner to the other, without marking lines in any way. I didn't care if they were evenly spaced or not. By this time, the quilt seemed to take on a life of it's own, and refused to be ordinary in any way! The finished quilt makes me smile, and I hope it does you too! I added a blue frame and used a photo editing program to place the quilt on a Rubik's Cube and an Easter Egg. I hope you try to make a quilt like this for yourself or perhaps for an old doll you may have. Have fun!

Hello, My Dear Quilting Friends....By Carol Jean.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 340px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QVMqYiDup7g/SYOcnbOP8nI/AAAAAAAABEM/g9LCugNlyIk/s400/Carol,+Woodhull,+Ill,+Sept.+1990..jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5297249787854189170" />
Hello My Dear Quilting Friends. I just wanted you to know that I realize I haven't kept up with my blogging for a while. The Holidays always keep me busy and now I'm having my annual January Clear-Out. I empty closets and all the rooms of things for the Good-Will, or trash pick-up and just get everything ready for when it's time for a serious spring cleaning. One of my main rooms to clean out is my sewing room. I didn't realize how long it was going to take, and I started the pattern for the Maple Leaf Quilt Blocks without knowing that the pattern for the leaf stem measurements etc, are not where I can reach them. So first I need to clear out that room, and then I can get back to what I want to do, and that's share my quilting projects with you. So Please Bear With Me! I have many nice quilts and sewing tricks to share, and I promise to get them posted here again soon. Until then, Keep Piecing, and please stop back soon and see how it's going. ~Carol Jean~ (This photo was taken of me during a talk to the Extension Service ladies in Woodhull, Illinois, USA in September 1990. I was a bit younger then, wasn't I? The Blue Single Wedding Ring Quilt Wall Hanging I'm holding had just won a Blue Ribbon and Best Of Show at the Mississippi Valley Fair in Davenport, Iowa. The Quilt was later published with the pattern in Creative Quilting Magazine. The quilt has 750 pieces, all triangles, and was hand sewn and hand quilted using the stab stitch method.)

Fall Photos Of The Maple Trees In My Garden.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QVMqYiDup7g/SRiEQbEtl5I/AAAAAAAAA0o/Wy7FK61EFTQ/s200/100_0008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5267105181890090898" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QVMqYiDup7g/SRiDNove-3I/AAAAAAAAA0g/fcqosAHoIUs/s200/100_0020.jpg-FIXED.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5267104034507914098" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QVMqYiDup7g/SRh-EB3x6NI/AAAAAAAAA0Y/DjEdk3nfaK4/s200/100_0104.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5267098371896764626" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QVMqYiDup7g/SRh9SfSuXmI/AAAAAAAAA0Q/psw-GT8jlM4/s200/100_0164.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5267097520800947810" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QVMqYiDup7g/SRh8Fs_5PxI/AAAAAAAAA0I/fHsCtqhKGw4/s200/100_0145.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5267096201630138130" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QVMqYiDup7g/SRh6bltNtqI/AAAAAAAAA0A/FVDkl6_fxss/s200/100_0097.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5267094378606605986" />

Here is a sample of different kinds of Maple Leaves from my Garden. I would like to share the directions with you, but don't have time today, so I'll have to come back to it. Meanwhile, if you would like to make a quilt like this yourself, begin collecting pretty fall leaves and take a handful with you to the quilt shop and buy fat quarters, or so, of as many different prints as you can find that resemble your sample leaves. Be sure to only buy 100% cotton fabrics so your finished quilt will last a lifetime. The blocks I'll be giving directions for measure 6 inches square finished with a seam allowance added. The individual squares and triangles in each block are cut from 2 1/2" strips. You can begin washing and preparing your fabrics, and come back later to get the rest of the directions. In the days of the Great Depression, women made quilts with pretty colors to lift their morale. Often this pattern was made for a little girl using fabric scraps from her very own dresses. My mother, who was a child at that time, wanted such a quilt for herself. She didn't get one then, but purchased one years later at an estate sale, which she proudly displayed on her bed. I still have the quilt. Here is a photo of my mother, little Dorothe Margarete, wearing a bonnet not too unlike the one on the quilt block.

My Sunbonnet Sue is hand appliqued on a 4 inch square of Muslin. (Plus seam allowance.) The flowers she's holding and the little blue butterfly were cut from a fabric print and sewn into place. A blue border was added, and then the little quilt was hand quilted. Because it was going to be framed, I chose to add a bit of lace around all sides. My husband custom made the frame with pre-decorated strips of wood trim from the home remodeling store. Wood stain was added to the strips.

The finished quilt was entered in the Mississippi Valley Fair in Davenport Iowa, and it won a First Place Ribbon. After the show, the judge, who was a quilt teacher, said to me, "I wasn't sure it was sewn and not glued in place because I couldn't see any stitches." Then I blurted out, "I didn't think you were supposed to see them, so I hid them in the fold of the fabric where it was turned under." She just looked at me, and then I realized that on her applique, the stitches showed. I imagine she went home that night and tried to work it out for herself. I hope she made it! She did say to me, "You won the ribbon because this was perfect." You don't hear those words too often in your life, and so I've always had a special fondness for this quilt. (21 pieces.)

The Rose Fabric is by The American Heirloom Collection. It's a pretty block with the roses carefully placed in each piece. It's one of my favorites. Note: I had to redraft the pattern to make it look like the block in the actual quilt. The block has a Square-In-A-Square in the center of the block, and there are white triangles in the borders. The pattern in the Dear Jane Book is not accurate.

H-10, Ben's Bow ties. (26 pieces.)

This block was easy to sew.

All of the Dear Jane Quilt Blocks have letters for the rows, and numbers for the position of the blocks in those rows. All of the blocks measure 4-1/2" square, finished. (5" with seam allowance.) The pieces in each block are counted, and then they are added together as you work on the quilt. This is not a quilt for beginning quilters. ~Carol Jean~

"A MAN WOULD DO NOTHING, IF HE WAITED UNTIL HE COULD DO IT SO WELL THAT NO ONE AT ALL WOULD FIND FAULT WITH WHAT HE HAS DONE." ~Cardinal Newman~

Rainbow, Fence Rail Miniature Quilt.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QVMqYiDup7g/SOcDu0tXOaI/AAAAAAAAAnU/TCsFHvcaKlA/s320/Fence+Rail,+30%27s+colors,.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5253171593308748194" />
I save and trade scrap fabrics to make scrap quilts. I especially like to make miniature quilts. Often, when I have a basketful of scraps, I'll cut them into 1-1/2" strips with my rotary cutter and ruler and save them for future projects. When I have enough strips saved up, I like to see what I can make with them.

For this quilt, I used 1-1/2" strips, 3-1/2" long. That measurement includes the seam allowance. I arranged three strips as a set, with dark strips on one side, medium fabrics in the center and lighter strips on the end. I tried to use colors that were in the same color family in the sets. Three purples, three greys, three browns, etc. Then the strip sets were sewn on the sewing machine and pressed. These blocks were set together alternating the direction of the placement of the strips. I sewed these sets together into rows, or you can join four blocks together to make a larger block and then assemble these blocks into rows. This gives the blocks more stability and makes the quilt easier to handle. Make the quilt as big as you like and add a border, backing and then quilt it. You can also make the pattern with larger strips, 2-1/2" wide by 6-1/2" long.

This pattern would make a nice Baby Quilt. It's a great way to use up your scraps. Easy enough for beginning quilters. Have fun! ~Carol Jean~

The Dear Jane Stickle Quilt.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QVMqYiDup7g/SOcPfyE2NDI/AAAAAAAAAnc/wrw523JWN4c/s400/Dear+Jane+Stickle+Quilt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5253184529043436594" />
I am in love with the Quilt made by Jane Stickle in the American Civil War Era, called the Dear Jane Quilt. There is too much information about it to give out here, so I'm going to let you visit the Dear Jane Website to read about Jane and her quilt yourself. The patterns have been drafted and put in a book, and groups of quilters have been working on reproducing the quilt for themselves. A few years ago I was working on mine and finished 47 blocks. Then the quilting group I was sewing the blocks with got sidetracked and started working on something else. I've noticed that working with a group can do one of two things. It can help motivate you to do more than you thought you could do, or it can get you so hopelessly lost you can never find your way back again. I think this is what happened to me. Now, I see the blocks I had made for this quilt in my photo album at Webshots and it makes me wish I could get the quilt out and work on it again. I've decided to try to finish 49 blocks (I already have 47 done) and that way I can make a wall quilt with 7 blocks x 7 rows. I thought by starting this Blog, I could motivate myself to work on it again. So I'm beginning with this story and the link to the Dear Jane Website. Then I will show some of the blocks I have already made.

The finished blocks are only 4-1/2" square and many have pieces that are no larger than a quarter of an inch. All of my blocks are sewn by hand, but some of the girls who are making this quilt are machine sewing their blocks or paper piecing them. There are wonderful photos of some of the finished quilts at Webshots. I have provided a link to these in the Link List at the left side of this page. I've also provided a Slide Show of my finished Dear Jane Blocks for you to see. I hope you find the Jane Journey to be an interesting one. The Dear Jane Pattern Book and Civil War Era Reproduction Fabrics can be found at your local Quilt Shop or Fabric Store, or Online. Judy Rothermel of the Schoolhouse Quilt Shoppe has worked with Marcus Brothers Fabrics to Reproduce many fine prints from that era that would work beautifully in your Dear Jane Quilt. I have also provided a link to her online store in the Link List. Wish me luck on my Dear Jane Journey...~Carol Jean~

Miniature Sampler Quilt With Four Inch Blocks.

This is a Miniature Sampler Quilt that I made with 4 inch blocks. Bear is helping me display it for these photos. The fabrics are 100% cotton reproduction 19th century fabrics that are pre-washed. These blocks happen to be sewn on the sewing machine, but I also like to hand piece my blocks. I try to use as many different prints in my quilts as possible. I save my scraps and have even traded scraps with friends to have more. I search for fabrics with a lot of visual texture, in small, medium and large patterns, but not too many colors or they seem too busy. I limit my color pallet in most of my quilts. This quilt has red, tan, black, green, gold and navy blue in it. I see about 10 different red prints in it, and about the same number of tan prints. Having a lot of different prints in a quilt makes it visually interesting. It's much more fun to work on too, than a quilt with only 3 or 4 fabrics in it.

Most of the pieces in this quilt are one inch squares. The school house has a few other pattern shapes in it. All of the blocks are based on a 4-Patch grid, which means that the blocks can be divided into a grid of 4 down by 4 across. To draft the pattern yourself, mark a 4 inch square on graph paper. Or perhaps you'd like to enlarge the pattern to 8, 12, or 16 inches. It's easy as long as you can divide the number by four. Mark your square in 4 rows down by 4 rows across. Now you have 16 squares. Cut some of the squares in half to make them into triangles following the designs in the quilt photo. Make templates from plastic the size of the squares and triangles. Either, buy template plastic at a quilt, fabric or craft store, or you can even cut pieces from the clear plastic lids off of margarine containers. Mark around the template with a pencil on the back of your fabric scraps. Cut them out, leaving a one quarter inch border for the seam allowance. Sew the pieces together following the diagram, by sewing across one row at a time, and then joining the rows. More detailed instructions can be found in books about Quilt making or on the Web. Or perhaps you would enjoy taking a Quilting class. These directions are just to give you an idea about how a quilt block is made. After sewing all of your blocks, sew them into rows and join the rows. Then the borders are added. Quilt batting and a large square of fabric are added to the back and then the quilt is quilted. Binding is added last around all four edges of the quilt. Then add a label with your name and date to the back of the quilt. It's like signing a painting. You want future generations to know who made this lovely quilt.

I hope this gives you some idea of what a quilt is composed of, and that it inspires you to take your first steps into Quilt making. It's fun! My name is Carol Jean and I Love Quilts! I've been a Quilt Maker for almost 30 years. I taught myself to Quilt by reading Quilting Magazines, and within a few years, I was writing for the same Quilt Magazines myself. I've had over 130 Quilts and Quilting articles published in a total of 10 different Quilting Magazines. I learned to draw out designs, choose fabrics, hand piece, machine piece, hand and machine quilt and applique. I've taught classes and workshops, and given lectures on Quilts and Quilting, and enjoyed myself immensely! The last few years, I've slowed my pace a bit. Health problems and changing eyesight make Quilting more challenging these days. But I thought perhaps you'd enjoy going back in time with me to see some of my Quilts and maybe you'd be inspired to do some Quilting on your own. Take care, And Keep Piecing! ~Carol Jean~

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lovingstitchesbycaroljean.blogspot.com/2008/09/hi-im-carol-jean-welcome-to-my-quilt.html' title='Hi!
